Qualitative Research Supervisor – 4 Positions

Action Against Hunger is a humanitarian organization recognized as serving the public interest and founded in 1979. Operating in more than 50 countries, the organization works across the sectors of nutrition, health, food security and livelihoods, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and mental health and care practices. As part of our programs, we are currently seeking: Qualitative Research Supervisor.

Geraneral Objective

This person will participate in a Nutrition Determinants Analysis Research in Mueda district providing support to the Research Leader including the development and finalization of the qualitative data collection tools, conduction of interviews and focal group discussions, documentation and systematization of collected data and engagement with the communities selected.

This person will follow strictly the guidance of the Research Lead during all activities and communicate immediately any issue affecting the data collection and/or relationship with the selected community.

With the support of his/her Research Lead, s/he must quality technical inputs to the research addressing data collection and communities selected in an ethical manner complying with qualitative research and ACF principles.

Specific Objectives (Not limited to the following)

Mission 1: Participate in the development and finalization of qualitative data collection tools

• To develop the development of visual qualitative data collection tools for the participatory exercises.
• To ensure context adaptation of qualitative data collection tools to increase the research quality.
• To finalize the data collection tools with the guidance of the Research Leader.

Mission 2: Conduct qualitative data collection under the guidance of the Research Leader formal and informal interviews, focus group discussions and participatory exercises, as directed by the NDA Analyst

• To conduct formal and informal interviews with key informants and community members.
• To conduct focus group discussions and participatory exercises.
• To ensure close communication and coordination with the Research Leader during the qualitative data collection phase.

Mission 3: Organization of interviews and group discussions in the sampled communities

• To follow ACF Research Ethical principles in every community interaction under the guidance of the Research Leader.
• To contact community members and organize community interviews and focus group discussions with the support of ACF Mueda team.
• To conduct focus group discussions.
• To coordinate with ACF Mueda team on the practical and logistical arrangements for the organization of sessions in the community.
• To follow DO NO HARM principle during community interactions.
• To follow ACF Mueda security protocols including movements, communication and community and authorities engagement.

Mission 4: Take detailed and relevant notes during all community exchanges

• To organize and systematize notes of interviews and focus group discussions.
• To transcribe recorded community exchanges.
• To provide electronic data inputs when required.
• To provide all data collected in an organized and systematized way as per the Research Leader requests.

Mission 5: Active participation in daily debriefings and initial data analysis

• To provide inputs and feedback to the Research Leader  during the daily briefings.
• To comply with the guidance of the Research Leader according to the daily briefings discussions.

Please note that this list of responsibilities is not exhaustive. Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned based on operational needs and activities, following approval by the relevant supervisors.

Skills & Experiences Required for the Position

• Education level (if relevant) and experiences expected:
  • University degree in social sciences, public health or equivalent;
  • Professional experience in an NGO in the fields of health, nutrition, food security, water, sanitation and hygiene or anthropology;
  • Proven experience in qualitative research and/or community engagement;
  • Experience working in Mueda is a plus.
• Technical skills:
  • Advanced communication and information-sharing skills (oral and written);
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Experience of working in communities with frequent travel;
  • Knowledge of the study area;
  • Participatory methodologies and group management;
  • Flexibility / Neutrality / Objectivity / Perseverance;
  • Fluency in English and/or Spanish;
  • Fluency in local languages: Ximaconde e Kissuahil;
  • Ability to prioritize activities, plan and estimate schedules and resources for Mobile Brigades projects;
  • Familiar with nutritional survey methodologies (SMART, NCA, SQUEAC, etc.).
